ACT TWO
Lights up on the same apartment. Maybe with a few more packed boxes. JASON is piling boxes near the door. He takes a drink from a beer. Beside the beer is a pizza carton. Suddenly there is a vicious pounding at the door. JASON smiles and takes a comfortable seat at the other end of the room, nursing his beer and grabbing a slice of pizza. The loud knocking continues at the doorway.
JASON
Itâs open.
A very angry and distraught HARRY enters, practically livid.
HARRY
You bastard!
JASON
Technically, thatâs correct. Problems, Harry, Harry Deiter?
HARRY
You told her! You told my mother everything.
JASON
Was that a problem?
HARRY
My god, you donât know what youâve done. Why?!
JASON
A family should have no secrets. You look like you could use a beer.
HARRY
My mother collapsed. Sheâs under a doctorâs care now.
JASON
That was not my intention. Honestly. She did take it kind of hard. The truth can be uncomfortable. But if youâre gonna collapse, I guess the hospitalâs the place to do it.
HARRY
You had no right to do that. My god â¦
JASON
I believe this is your phone. And I hope you donât mind, I used it to order a pizza. I was kind of hungry and well, my phone is dead. Uncooked Kraft noodles donât quite do the trick. Thereâs still a slice left if youâre interested.
JASON tosses him the phone.
HARRY
This is a nightmare. Everything ⦠a nightmare. What did my mother ever do to you?
JASON
Oh, donât be so melodramatic. Youâre making it sound like a conspiracy. Oh, Iâd better warn you, this is Canadian beer. Better watch yourself. It contains alcohol.
HARRY
You called my mother on my own phone ⦠just to be cruel? I donât understand why you â¦
JASON
Actually, she phoned me ⦠or you, technically. You should be careful where you leave your phone. Bad things could happen. She seemed like a very nice woman. I think she and my mother would have gotten along wonderfully. Ironic, isnât it?
HARRY
I should kick the living shit out of you.
JASON
How American, but that wouldnât help their situation very much, now would it? Or yours either. Sure you donât want that beer?
HARRY
You smug son of a bitch â¦
JASON
That kind of language will get you nowhere. Youâve told me how your mother is, howâs your father?
HARRY is too angry to respond.
Not much of a change, huh? Well, Iâve got my fingers crossed for the both of you. Really I do. These are rough times for your family. I sympathize.
HARRY grabs JASON and pushes him up against a wall, with every intention of doing some great physical harm.
HARRY
This is unacceptable. You are dangerous.
JASON
Careful. You might hurt my kidneys.
HARRY
You had no right to tell my mother. No right!
JASON pushes him away.
JASON
I had every right. So now sheâs been dragged kicking and screaming into this mess like I have. Being lied to by her husband and son. She has every right to know. I just had the guts you and your father didnât. You, on the other hand, had no right to invade my life with your fucking soap opera and issue me ultimatums.
